At the Digital Landscape Architecture conference held in Vienna this year, the powerful combination of Rhino, Grasshopper, and Lands Design took center stage. Presented by Elham Ghabouli from Asuni, the research “Enhancing urban greenery: Integrating environmental data into 3D urban tree models” underscores the crucial role of these tools in sustainable urban development.
This innovative study introduces a method that incorporates additional environmental data into urban tree models, particularly focusing on carbon sequestration and solar radiation. By utilizing Grasshopper and digital 3D tree models, the researchers developed a CO2 calculator that offers precise estimates of carbon sequestration potential. Watch the video here.
One of the standout features of this research is the integration of surface temperature reductions caused by tree shadows with CO2 data. This combination provides urban planners with invaluable insights, enabling them to make more informed decisions regarding urban greenery. The results include a user-friendly interface that offers recommendations and visualizations for selecting suitable tree species. Watch the video here.
The discussion section of the paper highlights the importance of data integration in urban planning, while the conclusion advocates for further research to promote sustainable design knowledge in evolving urban landscapes. This research demonstrates the significant impact RhinoLands and Grasshopper can have on enhancing urban greenery and supporting sustainable urban development.
